Way of the Wolf
What the wolf represents, and why it matters to my students taking the O Level English exams this year.
The wolf series was borne out of a very dark period in my life. I had just recovered from a health scare, only to be confronted with two rather painful blows that threatened to knock me out completely.
To put it simply, my greatest pride had (and still has) become my greatest pain, and it was in the midst of all this suffering that the wolf was born.
So the question arises: “What is the symbolism of the wolf?”
Symbolism of the Wolf
According to Microsoft Copilot – yeah, I am too lazy to figure things out myself – and yeah, AI is going to take over the world – the wolf is many things to the Native Americans.
To summarise what Copilot had to offer: the wolf is a teacher and a mystic; it represents family and unity; it is also a teacher; and the list goes on.
But the two most important qualities – in my view – are loyalty and strength.
Loyal to friends, family and allies; strength in the face of adversity.
I don’t see why I should even bother looking for more qualities to admire – these two are more than enough.
So if you ask me why I should hold the wolf in such high esteem, I can be dramatic and reply “Two words!: loyalty and strength”.
And I don’t need to be Native American to do that.
Pain – A Way of Life
Life isn’t a bed of roses; we know that. In fact, it is mostly pain. And most of us know that.
Mark Manson mentioned this in his 2016 book ‘The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life’. He basically included in his groundbreaking book a fact that has been ingrained in the Chinese brain since the dawn of time.
We have Buddha to thank for that understanding. (Incidentally, Buddha was also mentioned in the book by Mark Manson.)
Since pain is as inevitable as Thanos, we can really only rely on our strength to overcome these adversities.
And a pack of good old loyal friends and family will make the journey more palatable.
This is what I understand from the wolf ~ if you ask me ~ and it has been the totem that has pulled me through the darkest of nights.

What’s Next?
For my students out there reading this blog post ~ yes ~ I know you totally enjoy my wolf stories and depressive quotes which somehow all of you find inspiring (WTH?).
But that’s also the problem.
I need to be melancholic enough to post something that carries the kind of punch that you have all grown accustomed to.
In either case, I will channel the wolf when I can feel enough of the darkness in myself.

What It Means to Embrace the Wolf Totem
An old friend of used to say that I am uncontrollable.
It’s almost as if I will do anything I want, and not care two hoots about what others think.
But isn’t that what the wolf totem is all about?
You set a goal, and thereafter, move towards it relentlessly.
In what way is relentless controllable?
In the same way, since the bulk of you reading this are taking the O Levels this year – and by this year, I mean 2025 – I need you to embrace the wolf totem in its entirety.
Set a goal to be great, and move towards your goal relentlessly.
The wolf is known for its purposeful gait. It doesn’t engage in frivolous entertainment.
And it will definitely not be affected by screaming banshees whose egos are so small that they cannot accept that you are way smarter than them.
So be who you need to be, and to hell with those who don’t understand.
